Creator and maintainer of the Guys Named Kim web page.

Born October, 1956 in San Francisco, CA

Kimbo is my "nickname" and how most people know me. According to my father, I was named after the main character in Rudyard Kipling's novel KIM by Rudyard Kipling.  (But the main character's name is Kimball, so I sometimes wonder if Dad is telling the whole story . . .)

There was the time I was using my credit card when the cashier called out loudly across the store "Is it okay if he uses his wife's card?" I quickly corrected the cashier's mistake, but the story represents the common assumption (at least in the United States) that the name Kim (or Kimberly) is a girl's name.

In the early (pre-Internet) days of computer networks (Compuseve, GEnie, Prodigy and AOL), I often used the User ID of "Mr. Kim" to try and avoid the assumptions made by other network users. Back then, women were rare on computer networks and the other male users tended to act like sharks in a feeding frenzy when a woman (or anyone who had a female sounding name) showed up. Back then, I was often invited to "chat privately", until I explained that Kim is one of those names that can be male or female . . .

My interests are, I'd like to think, eclectic. I like to read. I enjoy reading books of all types, but my favorite genre is Science Fiction and Fantasy. My favorite authors (currently) are: Roger Zelazny, particularly his Amber stuff, Michael Stackpole, Laurell K. Hamilton and David Weber.

My life-long hobby, interest, or avocation is collecting and playing board games. I have a medium size collection (800+ titles and growing!) of games. I'm not particularly interested in "family" board games like Monopoly, Sorry or Clue which are for the most part un-interesting and over-rated games. My interests lie in the family of "strategy" board games (which can also make great family games). Games like Settlers of Catan or Ticket to Ride are just two examples among many other interesting titles. I also like "war games" or "conflict simulations" - games that are based on historical conflicts like the Battle of the Bulge or The Napoleonic Wars. The web site BoardGameGeek is probably the best site on the web for more information about board games of any type. Another good web site, with a focus on conflict simulations is ConsimWorld.

Another hobby I enjoy is Geocaching. One way to describe Geocaching is that it is a hi-tech treasure hunt. I have a web site of my own devoted to Geocaching.

I also have an interest in robotics, but since I have little or no mechanical ability, I limit my interest to Lego Mindstorms robots. I'm also interested in computers and computer programming.

I am employed by Adventist Health as a programmer/analyst.

I live near Sacramento, CA with my wife, Theresa. We have three children: Jessica, Amber and Earl, and two grand-children: Nathaniel and Niemah.
